Migrant construction labourers walking round the outside of a construction site in Beijing’s Chaoyang district on a day heavily laden with pollution – a fog dense enough to have forced the closure of the city’s airport, and have health warnings issued to keep children and old people indoors. Part of the pollution is due to unbridled construction, engendering the destruction of much of the city’s old quarters – far more the fabric of this old city than the iconic monuments on display shrouding the exterior of this particular construction site, itself built on top of old hutong housing. Symbols of propaganda as much as history, are pictured Imperial monuments - the outer wall and moat of the Forbidden City, and the Temple of Heaven, with blue skies contrasting starkly with the present – far more common - reality.
