Fishing boat resting on a mudbank in the Haven, the tidal river of the Port of Boston. The port made the city rich off international trade in the 13th Century, and was part of the Hanseatic League. The silting of the river, and changes in trade, led to early decline. The Haven was the scene of an early, abortive, attempt of pilgrims to escape to America - including part of the group that later succeeded on the Mayflower.
