Snow piled up on a tight bend in the road leading to the Susten Pass (2224m) linking the Cantons of Uri and Berne in the High Alps, shortly before closing for a seven month winter. Despite attempts in previous centuries, the road was only completed in 1946, for use officially for both tourism and the millitary. The area around the St Gottard massive, was part of the National Redoubt, the final Swiss line of defence in the high alps, and is checkered with the remains of millitary installations, many of them underground, still camouflaged.
