Alpine lansdcape by the summit of the St Gotthard Pass (2,106m), shortly after opening after a seven month winter. A statue commemorates the historic nature of the pass, in use since the 13th century. A road signs shows the directions to Lucerne and Zurich one way, and Milan and Bellnzona on the other, either side of the alpine massive. The modern tunnels running far below are one of Europe's main transport routes, linking Italy to Northern Europe. The pass road is shut for months in winter due to heavy snow, only opening - mainly for tourism - in May. The area belonged to the National Redoubt, the final Swiss line of defence in the high Alps, and is checkered with the remains of millitary installations, many of them underground, still camouflaged.
