Wooden marker by the road near the summit of the Furka Pass (2431m) connecting Uri and Valais in the Swiss alps. Such markers are used to show the position of the route when covered by snow. Photographed shortly before the road closed for a seven month winter. Historically this area, around Uri belonged to the National Redoubt, the final Swiss line of defence in the high alps, and is checked with the remains of millitray installations, many of them underground, still camouflaged.
