Passes0498.jpg
Alpine lake by the summit of the St. Gotthard Pass (2,106 m), one of the principal historic Alpine crossing points, in use since the 13th century. The modern tunnels running far below are one of Europe's main transport routes, linking Italy to Northern Europe. The pass road is shut for months in winter due to heavy snow, only opening - mainly for tourism - in May. The area belonged to the National Redoubt, the final Swiss line of defence in the high Alps, and is checkered with the remains of millitary installations, many of them underground, still camouflaged.
