Rain storm rapidly approaching over housing by the Maud Foster Drain. In the first decade of the century, the population officially grew by 15%, a trend that has continued with new waves of migration. The local council itself claims the figure is much higher. Many ordinary streets – such as this one, have former family homes becoming subdivided apartments, far more profitable for landlords, driving up rents, while basic wages have stagnated (presently 30% below the national average). Local people claim that they are being priced out of the housing market, while, due to local taxation being based upon housing, the tax-base has not increased in line with the population growth, placing further strain on services.
