Sand covers the metal shell of the controversial new Beijing Opera House following a sandstorm the previous night which dumped over 300,000 tonnes of matter on the capital. It was the tenth such storm of the year, directly caused by environmental degradation, desertification and massive construction projects. Hospitals were inundated with patients complaining of respiratory problems and the sky remained yellow, dense with suspended particles.
