DIverse people gathered round a smoking fire in an attempt to keep warm, amongst some 2,000 refugees and migrants who are stuck at the Berkasovo, on the border between Serbia and Croatia tonight. They are waiting since mid day when the border was closed for the second time and no one knows when it will open again. They prepare to spend the night on a muddy field in the no man's land between Serbia and Croatia. People are shivering, children are crying, their clothes are wet and dirty. Some 3,000 people were already left waiting in the rain in the past two days without shelter and with minimal assistance on hand.
More than 643,000 refugees and migrants arrived in Europe via the Mediterranean sea this year, including 502,500 in Greece only. Many of the refugees and migrants are desperate to move quickly onwards to Western Europe, fearing that borders ahead of them will close. As of Tuesday morning, there were more than 27,500 people on the Aegean Islands, either awaiting registration or onward transport to the mainland, and 5,000 new arrivals were recorded every day.
